The Man Who

Fear blossoms after the seasonal rains, unfurling waxy petals of unease to the morning sun. Neville Longbottom is by no means a boy of philosophy and thought; of science and voice. He does not scrawl illegible entries into a diary nor does he compulsively note important dates in his calendar.

He plants flowers instead; for he is a botanist and these, these are his memories and appointments to be seen to and journal records and ambitions arranged in neat, little rows. He plants pale orchids for birth; scarlet carnations for death; and golden marigolds for the times one tries in vain not to remember, but will never forget.

But he is not as negligent as they deem him to be. Neville Longbottom remembers.

And over the course of a thousand sweltering days, his beds are a mirthless, a rippling collection of red and yellow.

Scarlet and gold.

He wishes it were not so, yearns for the chance to rejoice; longs for the prospect of finally gracing his garden with an imperial, white bloom.

So he sows three seeds for three people, three seeds that in the spring will flourish into towering flora of pristine white.

And this is the way he learns how to hope and he will be damned to even consider that they will not return. Though he dreads a great many entities and a great many beings, he knows - he knows – that the Boy Who Lived and his two loyal friends will rise to the occasion and that they will, by some divine intervention, deliver them from an almost uncertain existence.

He is careless by nature, he is virtuous in intent and he is no fighter.

But should the time come – and it will, for some things are inevitable – he will be one of the first to lead and last to surrender in combat. He will tussle and battle and avenge. He will show those dubious to his merits, that he has a purpose and that he is just as strong and bold as them all.

Neville Longbottom is a quiet crusader, with dirt caked under his fingernails and grass stains encompassing the knees of his pants. This is who he is: and he is capable.

He has faith and it is not something he is afraid to die for. It is more than can be said for many a wiser man than he.

It does not rain that endless summer when Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger fly the roost in search for the end:

It pours.
